Hunger is connected to food access, income, conflict, displacement, agriculture, climate shocks, disasters and many other pressures. HungerZero separates long-term food-security indicators from current humanitarian hazards so they are not confused with each other.

Responsible signposting

Data methodology
Two different datasets. Two different meanings.
The map deliberately keeps hunger prevalence and live hazards separate. A natural disaster marker does not automatically mean that a location is experiencing famine or severe food insecurity.
Prevalence of undernourishment
The country shading uses World Bank indicator SN.ITK.DEFC.ZS. It represents the percentage of the population whose habitual food consumption is insufficient to meet dietary energy requirements. HungerZero requests the most recent non-empty value available for each country.
Current humanitarian hazards
GDACS provides current disaster information. HungerZero displays selected drought, flood, tropical cyclone and wildfire events as contextual hazards that may affect communities, agriculture, infrastructure, livelihoods or food systems.
Hazard does not equal hunger
A flood, drought or cyclone can create humanitarian pressure, but HungerZero does not infer famine, IPC phases or food-insecurity classifications from hazard data alone.

Food insecurity is multidimensional
There is rarely one single cause. Economic, political, environmental, agricultural and humanitarian factors can interact.
Conflict
Conflict can interrupt agriculture, employment, markets, transport and humanitarian access.
Poverty
Food may be physically available while still being unaffordable to households without sufficient income.
Drought
Prolonged rainfall deficits can reduce crop production, water availability and livestock health.
Flooding
Floods can damage farmland, infrastructure, food stocks, homes and transport routes.
Displacement
People forced from their homes may lose livelihoods, land, income and local support systems.
Nutrition
Food security concerns not only the quantity of food, but reliable access to safe and nutritious diets.
